If you are in pain, have facial swelling, have broken a tooth, or have lost a filling or crown, call the practice on 01803 389222. A member of our team will carry out a short triage over the phone so that we can allocate appointment time according to clinical urgency. Emergency appointments are £250 and are available to both registered and new patients across Torquay, Torbay, and the surrounding area.

Most dental pain originates from tooth decay, but infection, gum disease, a cracked tooth, or a failing restoration can all produce similar symptoms. Identifying the cause correctly is what determines the right treatment, and that is what an emergency appointment is for.

When to call 999 or 111 instead

Some symptoms need urgent medical attention rather than a dental appointment. Call 999 or contact NHS 111 immediately if you have swelling that is affecting your eye, your breathing, or your ability to swallow; difficulty breathing; bleeding you cannot stop; or a significant injury to the face or jaw. Do not wait for a dental appointment.

What does an emergency appointmentcost?

An emergency appointment is £250. This covers a focused assessment of the problem you have come in with, small X-rays of the affected area where they are needed, diagnosis, and routine emergency treatment where that is clinically appropriate on the day.

If your situation needs further or definitive treatment beyond that appointment, your dentist will explain the options and the costs before anything is booked. Nothing proceeds without your agreement.

An emergency appointment is not a full oral health assessment. A comprehensive examination of all your teeth, gums, and supporting structures is a separate, longer appointment. If you would like to arrange one, we can book it for you before you leave.

Treatment is subject to clinical assessment on the day. Not every problem can be fully resolved in a single emergency appointment, and some will need a further booking to complete.

Symptoms that warrant an emergency appointment

If you are experiencing any of the following, please do not wait for a routine appointment. Early assessment can often make treatment simpler and help stop the problem worsening.

Severe toothachePersistent or intense pain that over-the-counter painkillers are not controlling, or pain that wakes you at night.

Dental abscessSwelling of the gum, jaw, or face, sometimes with a raised temperature or a bad taste. An abscess needs prompt treatment.

Lost or broken filling or crownExposed dentine is sensitive and leaves the tooth vulnerable to further damage. Prompt attention protects what remains.

Chipped or fractured toothA crack can extend under normal biting forces. Assessment determines whether the tooth can be restored or needs removal.

05.

Knocked-out or displaced toothTime matters. Keep an adult tooth moist, ideally in milk, and contact us immediately. Re-implantation is sometimes possible.

06.

Bleeding that will not settleSome bleeding after a recent procedure is expected. Bleeding that is persistent or heavy needs clinical assessment.
